What about those who claim to have a special word form god? How can we know what is true?

By Brad Ward

Many people in the modern church make a grave mistake when they base their knowledge of God upon untrustworthy and unbiblical sources. Why must we stand firmly on scripture alone to derive our doctrine, beliefs, and practices? Why is “Sola Scriptura” – The Bible Alone as our source for truth, knowledge of God, salvation, and Christian living – so important? The human heart is deceitful, the intellect is often wrong, the traditions of men can be and often are contrary to Scripture, and subjective religious experiences such as visions and dreams can be deceptive.

  1. The Human Heart

“The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:9

2. The ways, thoughts, and opinions of men

There is a way which seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
The traditions and precepts of men.

Proverbs 14:12

3. The traditions and precepts of men

6 he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 “You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:
8 ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,
BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
9 ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’

Matthew 15:6-9

4. The philosophies, traditions and principles of the world.

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

Colossians 2:8

5. Religious or mystical experiences (angelic messages, visions, etc.).

Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind,

Colossians 2:18

It is necessary for the Christian to be in the Word day and night that we would have any possibility of obedience and to have true prosperity and success as defined by God (Joshua 1:18). True knowledge of salvation and godly living is found only in His Word (Psalm 119:105). In a reply to Satan’s temptation, Jesus teaches that God’s Word is our sustenance and that it is His Word that feeds us with knowledge of God. We need more than physical sustenance for life, we need spiritual food that can only be found in His Word (Matthew 4:4). It is foolish to establish one’s life solely on the ways of the world and traditions of men – they will all pass away. But God’s Word is solid, unchanging. Christ is the rock upon which one’s foundation must be built. (Matthew 7:24-27). Diligence or commitment to God means living in His Word so that we can show ourselves approved, worthy of handling and sharing His Word (2 Timothy 2:15). When the Word of Christ dwells within us we are capable of teaching, correcting, and uplifting one another (Colossians 3:16). All good gifts are from God!

Prayer
Righteous Father, guide me into a deeper commitment and love for your Word. Fill me with your Word that I speak and think your Word always and be a good witness for your Kingdom.
Amen
